Daryl Joseph Moore is the new dean of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s College of the Arts. He will assume his new role on Feb. 1.

Moore replaces H. Gordon Brooks, the first dean of the College of the Arts at UL Lafayette, who retired in 2021 after a 27-year tenure. Michael McClure, the college’s associate dean and a professor in the School of Architecture and Design, served as interim dean following Brooks’ retirement.

Moore, who was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, brings a long track record of achievement to the University.

During a decades-long career in higher education, he most recently served as dean of the College of the Arts and Communication at William Paterson University. Moore was founding dean of the College of the Arts at California State University, Stanislaus. He chaired the Department of Art and Design and was a faculty member at Montclair State University.

“Dean Moore is a passionate educator and proven leader whose longstanding commitment to higher education, the arts, scholarship, and building relationships on campuses and in communities will provide strategic guidance to strengthen and enhance the college and its status as a cultural and aesthetic force,” said Dr. Jaimie Hebert, UL Lafayette provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

Moore’s many administrative accomplishments and areas of focus include successful implementation of new academic programs; coordinating national accreditation efforts; helping to secure grant funding and private gifts; faculty development; and creating civic and industry partnerships.

“Joining the UL Lafayette community and contributing to the advancement of a public R1 institution of merit, inclusion and knowledge creation is exciting and challenging. The University’s vision, mission, progressive culture and worldview in the preparation of students to be global citizens mirrors my ideals,” Moore explained.

“I’m very much looking forward to collaborating with creative educators and students across disciplines, and establishing partnerships in the community, state and beyond,” he added.

In addition to his work in administration and the classroom, Moore holds extensive visual arts professional experience in a range of capacities, including executive leadership positions. He is also a prolific researcher, author and speaker.

Moore’s “Design and the Creative Process” is a multidisciplinary examination of the design process from the perspectives of an international group of designers. Thomson Delmar Learning published the book in 2007.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts and Manufactures and Commerce in London. Moore has been a visiting scholar at East China Normal University and is a visiting scholar at the Shanghai Institute of Technology School of Art and Design.

He earned a master of fine arts degree in advertising design from Syracuse University and holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in communication design from Pratt Institute.
