Rep. Clay Higgins, U.S. Congressman representing Louisiana’s 3rd district since 2017, used his social media platform to address issues surrounding free speech and online conduct in the wake of recent events involving Charlie Kirk.
On September 11, 2025, Higgins posted on X: “I’m going to use Congressional authority and every influence with big tech platforms to mandate immediate ban for life of every post or commenter that belittled the assassination of Charlie Kirk. If they ran their mouth with their smartass hatred celebrating the heinous murder of”. The statement reflects Higgins’ intention to leverage legislative power to influence content moderation policies on major technology platforms.
Later that day, he added: “Never forget, and never fail to recognize the darkness that threatens Christianity.
Wake up America.
Wake up and buckle up.” (September 11, 2025). This message called attention to perceived threats against Christian values in American society.
Three days later, on September 14, Higgins wrote: “There are societal limits to the freedom of speech. We the People are reminding our fellow citizens that some speech will not be tolerated, and operating freely within the construct of our society requires some modicum of decent behavior, as determined by our traditional values.”
Higgins has served as a member of Congress since replacing Charles Boustany in 2017 and previously held office in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Born in New Orleans in 1961 and currently residing in Lafayette at age 61, Higgins is known for his vocal stances on issues related to public morality and national identity.
These statements come amid ongoing debates about online speech regulation and reflect broader concerns over societal norms regarding acceptable discourse on digital platforms.
