Construction will soon begin on the University Avenue Revitalization project in Lafayette, LA. Starting on February 20, 2024, the construction will take place between Alcide Dominque Dr. and Walker Rd. The project aims to improve the corridor by replacing the center turn lane with a raised median, as well as upgrading pedestrian facilities, landscaping, and lighting.
According to the project announcement, the construction work will include various elements such as concrete pavement and curb, base course, drainage, sidewalks, driveways, handicap ramps, asphalt overlay, pavement markings, and street lighting. The initial phase of the construction will involve mobile working operations during the nights of February 20 through February 23 for striping. During this time, the existing center turn lane will be removed, and the travel lanes will be shifted towards the middle of the roadway.
To ensure the safety of motorists, intermittent lane closures will be required throughout the project's duration. However, there will be specific time periods when lane closures will not occur. These include weekdays between 7 am and 8:30 am, school days between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm, and weekdays between 5 pm and 6 pm. Additionally, it is important to note that southbound traffic may be impacted if there are queues that affect exits on I-10.
As the construction progresses, motorists are advised to exercise caution and be prepared for potential delays. The Lafayette Department of Public Works has provided the following statement regarding the project:
"We understand that construction can be inconvenient, but we are dedicated to improving the University Avenue corridor for the benefit of the community. We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this construction period."
In addition to the University Avenue Revitalization project, a groundbreaking ceremony for the North University Revitalization Project is scheduled to take place on Friday, February 23, at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the Truman Early Childhood Education Center.
The University Avenue Revitalization project is expected to bring significant improvements to the area, enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the corridor. It will provide safer and more accessible pedestrian facilities, improved traffic flow, and an overall revitalized environment for the community.
As construction begins on February 20, the Lafayette Department of Public Works urges motorists to stay informed about any updates or changes in traffic patterns through official announcements and local news sources. The department assures the public that they will work diligently to minimize disruptions and complete the project in a timely manner.
With the commencement of this construction project, Lafayette residents can look forward to a transformed University Avenue, promoting a more vibrant and efficient transportation network for years to come.
