Lafayette, LA – The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) has issued a warning for residents to remain indoors due to ongoing hazardous road conditions. Despite the sunny weather providing some relief from the cold, significant ice persists on bridges and other critical areas. Public Works crews are actively engaged with nearly 30 pieces of equipment to clear main roads and ensure emergency vehicles can operate effectively. Nonetheless, travel is still deemed dangerous, prompting officials to urge residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary.
For those who must venture out for essential purposes, LCG has provided safety guidelines:
- Be vigilant for black ice on roadways, particularly on bridges and in shaded areas.
- Reduce speed to between 15-20 mph on major roads and drive cautiously in icy conditions.
- Limit travel to daylight hours for better visibility and safety.
- Expect lane reductions, especially on major bridges, aimed at slowing traffic and enhancing safety.
- Avoid distractions while driving; focus on the road to quickly respond to changing conditions.
“Your cooperation is critical,” stated Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet. “Our Public Works crews are working around the clock to clear roads, but conditions are still dangerous, and with freezing temperatures expected tonight, the roads will likely ice over again. Staying home not only keeps you and your loved ones safe but also helps protect our community and gives first responders and emergency crews the space they need to do their jobs.”
The LCG expresses gratitude for residents' continued patience and vigilance during this period. For updates on road closures, residents are encouraged to visit lafayettela.gov/roadclosures.
Stay safe, Lafayette! Together, we will weather this storm.
