Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana has expressed concern over the United Kingdom's plan to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This move could affect the joint U.S.-U.K. military base on Diego Garcia, a strategic location in the Indian Ocean.

Kennedy highlighted potential risks, emphasizing that "China has a close relationship with Mauritius" and warning that "it is going to get a lot closer." He urged the UK Prime Minister not to proceed with this decision, stating it could harm U.S.-UK relations.

The UK had announced in October 2024 its intention to transfer sovereignty following pressure from the United Nations and reportedly from the Biden administration. The negotiations between the UK and Mauritius have been ongoing amid concerns about Chinese espionage capabilities if Mauritius gains control.

On January 15, 2025, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated he wanted input from President Trump regarding any agreements involving Diego Garcia. Kennedy welcomed this development as a positive step towards involving more parties in discussions.

Former Representative Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have also criticized the deal, highlighting threats to U.S. security interests.
