Bell Ringer credits Salvation Army of Lafayette for guiding him on the right path

Lafayette, LA – The Salvation Army of Lafayette kicked off the 2023 Red Kettle Campaign this morning at Lafayette City-Parish Hall, and as is tradition, Mayor-President Josh Guillory made the first donation while encouraging others to lend a helping hand. “The holiday season is a time for giving, so if you’re able, please consider contributing. Your donation helps to fund year-round programs that assist members of our community in need,” Guillory said.

Community members like Jacob Gardner, who’ll soon stand his post asking others to kindly donate. Gardner shared his story of how the Salvation Army helped him with counseling and resources that set him on a path to sobriety. “I am two months sober,” he said, pausing for a round of applause. “When I ring that bell, it’s a humbling experience, and it’s spiritual growth. I make people smile, and they make me smile.”

The Salvation Army uses donations to provide year-round services. So far this year, more than 21,000 meals have been provided, more than 5,500 clothing vouchers given, as well as thousands of diapers, and hundreds of hygiene kits. “When you donate to the Salvation Army, you’re funding hope,” said Salvation Army of Lafayette Captain Bruce Williams.

Starting Saturday, November 18, bell ringers will be positioned at various spots across Lafayette Parish. Besides Red Kettle donations, the community can also contribute to the Angel Tree Program, which aims to provide Christmas gifts to underprivileged children. Angel trees, flocked with wish lists, are located at Best Buy, Acadiana Mall, and the Salvation Army office at 212 6th Street.
