The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) is urging residents to exercise caution when disposing of empty electronic boxes after Christmas. In an effort to prevent crime, the LPD is advising against placing these boxes at the curb, as they can attract potential thieves.
"While an empty box sitting outside your home may seem harmless, packaging for expensive items could advertise to criminals what’s inside your home," explains LPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Robin Green.
With crime rates typically increasing during the holiday season, it is important to take steps to minimize the risk of becoming a victim. By keeping boxes inside the home or garage until collection day, or by breaking them down and placing them in the recycling bin, residents can reduce the likelihood of being targeted.
Sgt. Green emphasizes that crime is often opportunistic, stating, "Crime is about opportunity, and the less opportunities you give them, the less likely you’ll become a victim of crime."
It is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their homes and belongings during the holiday season. By being mindful of how empty boxes are disposed of, individuals can help deter potential thieves and ensure a safe and secure environment.
As the holiday season approaches, it is important to remember that prevention is key. Taking simple steps, such as properly disposing of packaging materials, can go a long way in safeguarding against potential burglaries. By following the advice of the LPD and being mindful of the messages empty boxes can send, residents can enjoy a worry-free holiday season.
