The Lafayette Fire Department is reminding citizens about the laws and safety precautions surrounding fireworks. While fireworks are legal in unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish, it is important to note that setting off fireworks within the City of Lafayette is illegal. This reminder comes as fireworks can pose a danger to both those lighting them and their neighbors, potentially leading to injuries and unintended fires.

According to Lafayette Fire Department Public Information Officer Alton Trahan, the main concern is safety. He emphasizes the potential risks associated with fireworks, stating, "Often, fireworks land in a field or next to someone's house, and subsequently, you have a small fire. We recommend having a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby in case a small fire pursues."

To ensure the safety of individuals and properties, the State Fire Marshal provides several guidelines. It is advised to detonate fireworks at least 200 feet away from structures, vehicles, and rubbish, and to move away immediately after lighting them. Additionally, it is crucial to never light fireworks in your hand and to never point or throw them at people, pets, cars, or buildings.

Supervision is essential during fireworks activities, with adults being responsible for overseeing the process. Children should never be allowed to light fireworks, and they should be kept away from small children to avoid accidents. It is also important to refrain from operating fireworks while impaired.

Taking precautions such as lighting devices one at a time and having a bucket of water or hose nearby can help in case of emergencies. Proper disposal of detonated items is also crucial to prevent reignition. Wetting them down before discarding and avoiding disposal in a trash container is recommended.

In conclusion, the Lafayette Fire Department is urging residents to prioritize safety when it comes to fireworks. Following the laws and adhering to the recommended safety measures can help prevent injuries and accidental fires. As Officer Alton Trahan states, "Our main concern is safety," and by being responsible and cautious, everyone can enjoy the festivities while minimizing risks.
