Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana has issued a warning to Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm regarding the potential negative consequences of imposing new rules and guidelines on the natural gas industry. In a letter sent earlier this week, Kennedy expressed his concerns that such measures could seriously harm a thriving sector that not only provides employment to tens of thousands of Americans but also offers affordable and reliable energy to millions.
Kennedy emphasized the importance of the natural gas industry in reducing the world's reliance on "dirty Russian energy." He highlighted the significant role that liquified natural gas (LNG) exports play in achieving this goal, urging the Department of Energy not to obstruct the permitting process unnecessarily.
In his letter, Kennedy stated, "the Department of Energy, through new guidelines and rulemakings, will crush a burgeoning U.S. industry that employs tens of thousands of Americans, provides cheap and reliable energy to millions, and is a vital instrument in weaning the world off of dirty Russian energy."
The senator also expressed his concerns that additional rulemaking by the Biden administration could severely limit the country's ability to harness its natural gas resources effectively, which would be a mistake. He highlighted the vast potential of the United States' natural gas reserves, conservatively estimated at close to 4,000 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). Kennedy urged the government to prioritize utilizing this resource to maintain energy independence, support allies, reduce emissions, and create well-paying jobs.
Louisiana, in particular, plays a crucial role in the LNG industry, with its export terminals accounting for 63% of all U.S. LNG exports. The sector provides employment to around 18,000 people in the state and contributes an impressive $4.4 billion to the Louisiana economy.
As Kennedy's letter emphasizes, any unnecessary limitations on the natural gas industry could have far-reaching consequences. It is vital for policymakers to consider the potential negative impacts on jobs, energy affordability, and the country's overall ability to transition to cleaner energy sources.
