WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Banking Committee, voiced his concerns today about the inefficiency and failure of the Sewage and Water Board of New Orleans to protect the homes and businesses of Louisianians from flood damage.
Kennedy highlighted the geographical vulnerability of New Orleans, stating, "When New Orleans gets two inches of rain in a short period of time, it floods. Why? Because New Orleans is below sea level, and it's in a bowl." He further explained the historical significance of the French Quarter, which was built in the highest area of the city by the founders.
Drawing attention to the Sewage and Water Board, Kennedy criticized its long-standing inefficiency, describing it as a "model of inefficiency" and a "cesspool of political patronage and corruption." He supported his claims by citing headlines from local TV stations that highlighted various instances of fraud, theft, and corruption within the board.
"The people of New Orleans deserve better," Kennedy asserted. He proposed two possible solutions to address the issue. The first option is to transfer the responsibility of running the Sewage and Water Board to the state of Louisiana, allowing someone else to take charge. The second option, according to Kennedy, is privatization. He emphasized the need for an alternative plan from the current board, which seems to suggest "Move to higher ground" as a solution when the pumps are dysfunctional.
In his remarks, Kennedy emphasized the urgency to address the inefficiencies of the Sewage and Water Board, stating, "The politicians have had their shot: They missed." He concluded by highlighting the need to prioritize the well-being of the people of New Orleans and find a more effective and accountable solution for managing the city's sewage and water systems.
