Lafayette, LA – Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet has announced the appointment of Paul Trouard as Interim Chief of Police. Chief Trouard will oversee the department during a transition period while a national search for a permanent candidate is conducted. This search, led by Chief Administrative Officer Rachel Godeaux, will commence within the next 30 days.
Mayor-President Boulet revealed Trouard’s appointment at a public safety press conference this morning. “I have full confidence in Chief Trouard’s ability to lead our department while we begin our search,” Boulet stated. “We’ve got really great leadership at Lafayette Police Department right now and are focused on getting the right Chief in this position rather than hiring someone simply to fill the role quickly.”
Chief Trouard brings 27 years of law enforcement experience to his new role, having served in various capacities within the Lafayette Police Department. Most recently, he held the position of Assistant to the Chief.
In addition to his extensive career in law enforcement, Chief Trouard served as a Staff Sergeant in the Louisiana National Guard and holds several law enforcement certifications. His academic credentials include a master’s degree from Columbia Southern University, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and an Undergraduate Certificate in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia. He is also an alumnus of the FBI National Academy.
Chief Trouard expressed his commitment to enhancing safety and security for Lafayette residents. He emphasized maintaining steady leadership with a focus on creating a highly trained, accountable, and community-oriented police force. “My expectation is that I expect perfection. If we chase perfection, we can achieve excellence,” said Trouard. “Public safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we are always better when we work together.”
As part of Mayor-President Boulet's nationwide search for a new Chief of Police, a key stakeholder committee will be formed to assist with the process and gather public input.
