Lafayette committee honors contributors to disability community

The Lafayette Mayor-President’s Disability Awareness Committee hosted its annual awards ceremony on October 8, 2024, at the Robicheaux Recreation Center. The event celebrated individuals and organizations that have made notable contributions to the disability community in Lafayette.

The awards aim to highlight leadership, service, and advocacy within the community. This year's honorees demonstrated dedication and commitment to fostering inclusivity in Lafayette.

The Acadiana Therapeutic Riding Organization received the Non-Profit of the Year Award. This accolade is presented to a non-profit that stands out as a key resource for the Lafayette Disability Community through new programs, grants, outreach efforts, or enhanced services.

TheraCare Music Therapy of Lafayette was named Business of the Year. This award recognizes businesses that go above and beyond in serving the disability community by being model employers or offering inclusive programs and activities.

Melanie Lavergne was honored with the Public Servant of the Year Award for her supportive actions as a public servant benefiting people with disabilities in Lafayette.

Landon Hanks earned the Youth of the Year Award for his advocacy work and actions providing substantial benefits to those with disabilities within his community.

Alaina Yount received the Lynette Fontenot Community Achievement Award. This award acknowledges individuals who show extreme dedication resulting in significant advancements in support and inclusion for people with disabilities.

Lastly, Lillian DeJean was awarded the Vickie Nettles Advocacy Award. It honors adults who excel as advocates within their community while achieving personal milestones despite having disabilities themselves.

The committee continues its mission to promote equality, awareness, and opportunities for those with disabilities throughout Lafayette. The awards ceremony underscores the collective effort needed to build an inclusive society for everyone.
