Residents of Lafayette, Louisiana, are being encouraged to recycle their old or unwanted Christmas lights instead of throwing them away. The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) has established a drop-off location at the Robicheaux Recreation Center for this purpose. A large blue dumpster is available for residents to dispose of their holiday lights safely.
The recycling service will be open from December 2, 2024, through January 1, 2025. Bess Foret, LCG Environmental Quality Manager, explained the importance of recycling these items: “If you want to recycle Christmas lights, remember, light strands are made with materials and components that require specialized recycling facilities, and the lights do not belong in the green curbside cart.” Foret added that by recycling holiday lights, residents can help manage resources better and prevent the lights from decomposing in landfills over many years.
Residents can begin dropping off their Christmas lights at the Robicheaux Recreation Center on Monday, December 2. The center is located at 1919 Eraste Landry Road. Only light strands should be recycled; packaging materials like plastic or Styrofoam are not accepted.
This initiative aims to keep Lafayette environmentally conscious during the holiday season.
