The Senate has approved a bill supported by Senators John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy, both from Louisiana, to rename the U.S. Postal Service facility located at 103 Benedette Street in Rayville, Louisiana. The facility will be designated as the "Luke Letlow Post Office Building." Senator Kennedy played a significant role in leading the Senate version of this legislation.
"Luke Letlow dedicated his career to improving the lives of Louisianians, and our state is very grateful for his life and contributions. Now that the Senate has passed our bill to rename the post office in Rayville after Luke, his memory will live on for years to come in Richland Parish," said Kennedy.
Luke Letlow had an impactful career serving the people of Louisiana through various roles. He worked in congressional and gubernatorial offices under Bobby Jindal and later became chief of staff to former Representative Ralph Abraham.
In 2020, Letlow was elected to represent Louisiana’s Fifth Congressional District but tragically passed away from COVID-19 complications just five days before taking office. He is survived by his wife, Representative Julia Letlow, and their two children, Jeremiah and Jacqueline.
"Luke’s death at too young of an age due to COVID robbed his family, Louisiana, and our nation of a man who served others his entire professional life. This post office naming memorializes his work, his life, and the tragedy of COVID," commented Cassidy.
The House's version of the bill was introduced by Representative Steve Scalise with support from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Representatives Julia Letlow, Clay Higgins, Garrett Graves, and Troy Carter. The House passed H.R. 7423 with bipartisan support.
