The Lafayette Fire Department has issued a reminder to residents about the prohibition of fireworks within Lafayette city limits. Residents are permitted to use fireworks only in the unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish from December 15 to January 1, with specific usage hours set from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. On December 24, December 25, and December 31, the allowed hours extend until 1:00 a.m.

Alton Trahan, Public Information Officer for the Lafayette Fire Department, emphasized the importance of safety during this period. “Safety is our top priority when it comes to fireworks this holiday season,” Trahan stated. He noted that fires and burn injuries often increase due to improper handling of fireworks and highlighted the unpredictability of airborne fireworks which can lead to accidental fires if they land on fields or near homes.

To ensure safe usage, the department provided several guidelines for handling fireworks responsibly:

- Keep at least a 200-foot distance from structures and vehicles when detonating.

- Avoid lighting fireworks by hand; instead, place them on stable surfaces.

- Do not aim or throw fireworks at people or property.

- Only adults should handle fireworks while ensuring children are kept away.

- Abstain from using fireworks under the influence of alcohol.

- Light one firework at a time and have water nearby for emergencies.

- Ensure used items are wet down before disposal to prevent reignition.

- Follow all instructions on packaging carefully.

These precautions aim to minimize risks associated with firework use during festive celebrations.
