Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana, along with Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa and 47 other colleagues, introduced a resolution condemning Hamas for its attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023. The attack resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,200 people, including over 40 U.S. citizens, and the abduction of at least 251 individuals.

Kennedy stated, "The world will never forget how Hamas terrorists slaughtered roughly 1,200 people in Israel—including Americans—in a single day. One year later, U.S. citizens remain in captivity in Gaza." He urged President Biden and Vice President Harris to condemn Iran's proxy militants and support Israel's right to defend itself.

The resolution highlights the death of Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin last month by Hamas. It also mentions hostages reportedly held by Hamas: Keith Siegel, Sagui Dekel-Chen, Edan Alexander, Omer Neutra, and the bodies of three other Americans—Itay Chen, Judith Weinstein, and Gadi Haggai.

Ernst commented on her experience upon hearing about the attacks while she was in the Middle East last year. She emphasized her commitment to supporting Israel and holding the White House accountable for its commitments.

The resolution condemns Iran-backed Hamas for its actions against Israel and U.S. citizens and protests involving property damage and threats against Jewish Americans. It calls for ensuring Israel's survival and safely returning American hostages.

Kennedy has been vocal about his support for Israel through various statements and legislative efforts throughout the past year.
