Federal aid allocated for hurricane recovery projects in south Louisiana

Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana has announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing $75,123,091 in grants for projects aimed at flood mitigation, debris removal, and permanent repairs following Hurricanes Ida and Laura. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Kennedy emphasized the significance of these funds in aiding communities in south Louisiana to recover from the devastation caused by the hurricanes.

“Hurricanes Ida and Laura devastated south Louisiana. This $75.1 million will help our communities rebuild and prepare for future storms by supporting flood mitigation, debris removal and permanent repair projects,” said Kennedy.

The funding allocation includes several key initiatives:

- Washington-St. Tammany Electric Cooperative is set to receive $23,362,422 for permanent repairs due to Hurricane Ida.

- Terrebonne Parish School Board will be granted $19,913,860 for similar repair efforts.

- Terrebonne Parish will use $7,330,271 for debris removal operations.

- The Society of the Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Lake Charles is allocated $4,844,147 for permanent repairs after Hurricane Laura.

- Grand Isle Independent Levee District will receive two allocations totaling $6,025,988 for repairs related to Hurricane Ida.

- Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is provided with $2,715,104 for emergency protective measures post-Hurricane Laura.

Additional funds are distributed among various entities including Livingston Parish ($1,943,643), Jefferson Davis Electric Cooperative ($1,261,153), Westwego Housing Authority ($1,247,038), Jefferson Parish ($1,239,840), Louisiana Children's Medical Center DBA LCMC Health ($1,201,968), and Ochsner Clinic Foundation ($1,004,552).

These FEMA grants are intended to support local agencies in implementing essential recovery activities while enhancing resilience against future natural disasters.
