Senators John Kennedy and Mike Lee have introduced a bill aimed at permanently stopping U.S. funding for abortions overseas. The proposed legislation, named the Protecting Life in Foreign Assistance Act, seeks to codify the existing Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy. This policy, formerly known as the Mexico City Policy, prohibits funding for foreign non-governmental organizations that perform or promote abortions.
The Mexico City Policy was initially established by President Ronald Reagan and has been subject to changes by subsequent administrations. Under President Donald Trump, the policy was expanded to close loopholes and was renamed.
"America shouldn’t fund abortions in foreign countries—no matter which party holds the White House. It’s time for Congress to show some moral clarity on this issue once and for all by passing this bill," stated Senator Kennedy.
"In our quest to build a society where every precious human life is protected, we cannot allow the tax dollars of American families to be used against the most vulnerable people in our country and across the world: the unborn," added Senator Lee.
The bill has received support from several other senators including Ted Budd, Marsha Blackburn, Kevin Cramer, Pete Ricketts, Jim Banks, Tim Scott, John Cornyn, Deb Fischer, Tommy Tuberville, Todd Young, and Ron Johnson.
