Lafayette, LA – Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG), Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA), and Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission (LCVC) have initiated the Lafayette Music Census. This initiative aims to provide insights into the region's music ecosystem. Administered by Sound Music Cities, a provider of music ecosystem studies, the Census will collect data to support the growth of Lafayette’s musical heritage.

Starting in October 2024, the Census will be open for three weeks. It calls on individuals in the music industry—musicians, venue owners, educators, producers, sound engineers, and administrative professionals—to participate. The Census will gather information about demographics, occupation types, and perspectives on economic opportunity, professional development, affordability, regulations, funding support, culture, and belonging.

"Our cultural economy is what makes us stand out from other cities in the country," said Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet. "This Census is a crucial step in understanding that niche."

The initiative has dual goals: to celebrate and elevate Lafayette’s musical talent while providing data to support this part of our cultural ecosystem. The Census will cover Lafayette Parish and nearby areas including Carencro, Youngsville, Scott, Broussard, Duson, and Milton.

Sound Music Cities began interviews with key stakeholders last week to gather information on Lafayette's musical landscape for developing the Census. They are also seeking community engagement partners to help spread awareness when the census is ready for distribution.

"We are excited to have Lafayette on board as one of the first cities in our second music census cohort,” said Sound Music Cities Founder and President Don Pitts. “Lafayette’s culturally rich music scene adds tremendous value to our collective efforts.”

The online Census can be accessed using various devices and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete depending on respondent category. Questions will focus on demographics, occupation types, workforce development needs, government support for the music ecosystem, livability for music workers, and community culture.
