Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) is organizing two events to promote environmental safety and sustainability. The Environmental Quality Division will host Paper Shredding Day on November 16 and Household Hazardous Waste Day on November 23. Both events are free for residents of the City of Lafayette and unincorporated areas.
Paper Shredding Day will take place at the Robicheaux Recreation Center, where residents can bring confidential documents for secure shredding from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. "By shredding sensitive documents, participants reduce the risk of identity theft while also ensuring that shredded paper is recycled responsibly." Documents should be free of binders and clips, though stapled papers are allowed. Each household is limited to three kitchen-size garbage bags, and only personal documents will be accepted.
Household Hazardous Waste Day offers an opportunity for safe disposal of hazardous materials at Northgate Mall from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. "Improper disposal of household chemicals can contaminate the air, water, and land, and endanger waste collection staff." Accepted items include alkaline batteries, chemical cleaners, fluorescent tubes, gasoline, herbicides, mercury thermometers, paint products, pesticides, photographic chemicals, pool chemicals, stains, turpentine among others.
Items not accepted during this event include appliances like TVs and CRT monitors; office equipment such as copiers; toner/ink cartridges; digital devices like GPS units or cameras; automotive or rechargeable batteries; motor oil; compressed gas cylinders; medical waste or radioactive material.
Electronics including computer hardware and accessories will also be accepted for disposal.
