WASHINGTON – In a move to address concerns about the influence of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in medical education, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) introduced the Embracing anti-Discrimination, Unbiased Curricula and Advancing Truth in Education (EDUCATE) Act. The bill aims to block federal funding for medical schools and accrediting institutions that compel students to adopt ideological beliefs related to DEI.

Kennedy emphasized the need to prevent discrimination in medical education, stating that, “Woke universities are forcing America’s future doctors to care more about race and gender than saving lives.” He added that the EDUCATE Act is designed to ensure that taxpayer dollars do not support institutions that prioritize DEI over academic excellence and scientific rigor.

Joining Kennedy in this initiative, Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) expressed concerns about the intrusion of DEI in the medical field, highlighting the importance of merit-based practices. Schmitt warned against compromising the quality of medical education with "woke politics and DEI," stating that such actions could endanger the lives of Americans who rely on highly skilled and disciplined medical professionals.

On the House side, Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) echoed the sentiment that discrimination has no place in American medical schools. Murphy emphasized the need for colorblind admissions processes and the rejection of coercive practices that infringe on students' freedom of thought. He underscored that while diversity is beneficial to medicine, it should not come at the expense of excluding individuals based on ideological conformity.

The EDUCATE Act, if passed, would enforce several restrictions on medical schools that promote DEI, including prohibiting the coercion of students to adopt specific ideological beliefs and maintaining DEI offices within the institutions. The bill aims to uphold the principles of academic freedom and excellence in medical education.
