Lafayette, LA – BISSELL Pet Foundation is promoting a national adoption event, "Empty the Shelters," from December 2-17, 2024. The initiative aims to bring holiday hope to homeless pets by encouraging adoptions with reduced fees. The Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center is among over 400 shelters in 45 states participating in this event.
All animals at the Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center are available for adoption at no cost. They come fully vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. The shelter operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from noon until 2:00 p.m.
Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, stated, “It has been an incredibly challenging year for saving lives, as our nation’s shelters continue to take in more pets than they are adopting out. Tens of thousands of shelter pets—of all breeds, ages, and personalities—are desperately in need of homes.” She emphasized that the event is not just about adoption but serves as "a lifeline for shelter pets."
Shelley Delahoussaye, LASCC Shelter Supervisor, noted that several pets have been at the shelter for over 30 days and expressed hope that they would find homes during the holidays. “Opening your home to a pet not only transforms their life but brings joy and companionship to yours,” she said.
"Empty the Shelters" began in 2016 with the goal of increasing pet adoptions and has since helped over 300,000 pets find homes. It remains BISSELL Pet Foundation's largest program.
The foundation advises potential adopters to research their chosen pet's needs and understand adoption requirements. More information can be found on www.bissellpetfoundation.org/empty-the-shelters and www.lafayettela.gov/lascc.
