Mayor-President Boulet launches new initiative for Bertrand Drive revitalization

Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet has initiated the Bertrand Drive Revitalization project, which aims to connect key amenities in Lafayette. The project focuses on improving pedestrian and cyclist connectivity through urban trails, enhancing traffic flow, and boosting economic activity along Bertrand Drive.

The Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) held a meeting with business and property owners along the corridor on November 20 to introduce the project and collect feedback. LCG is committed to community engagement and will host a public meeting on December 18 from 6-8 p.m. at South Louisiana Community College's Devalcourt Auditorium for residents and stakeholders.

“The revitalization of Bertrand Drive gives us the opportunity to begin an urban trail path connecting Cajun Field with Moncus Park,” said Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet. “We’re creating a space that prioritizes people—whether they’re walking, biking, driving, or simply enjoying the area’s amenities. This project will be a great connector of more than three miles of urban trails from Moncus Park to Blackham Coliseum and will serve as a launching pad for the Johnston Street revitalization project—all aimed at making Lafayette a safer, more vibrant place for everyone.”

The initiative serves as an important link in Lafayette’s expanding urban trails network, connecting Cajun Field and Moncus Park. The vision includes economic revitalization along the corridor, accessible shared-use pathways for various users on both sides of Bertrand Drive, and improvements in traffic flow to enhance safety.

Currently, Bertrand Drive faces challenges such as incomplete sidewalks, limited ADA accessibility, utility pole obstructions, and excessive driveway access. The revitalization project aims to tackle these issues through comprehensive streetscape improvements.

Such streetscape projects promote health through walkability and bike-friendly designs while encouraging community interaction and economic investment. They also aim to improve safety for all users and enhance aesthetics along the corridor. Additional benefits include electrical grid efficiency upgrades by LUS, underground relocation of communication lines, improved drainage systems, artist murals, wayfinding signage, outdoor patios with street trees, lighting enhancements for safety and visual appeal.

Community members are invited to join the conversation about Bertrand Drive's future at the upcoming public meeting on December 18 where they can share their input about this transformative initiative.
